The History of Ocarinas in Korea
Historically, Korea is a country with a rich tradition in ceramics and pottery. In its long history of 5000 years, there have been many types of ancient clay whistle-like instruments. These whistle-like wind instruments were always specially favoured by the nation due to their mesmerizing qualities. Consequently, Korea has always been advanced in the development of such wind instruments throughout history.
The Ocarina, being a Western instrument, was introduced to Korea in 1986 when the ocarina performance of Sojiro from Japan was featured in the soundtrack of a NHK-broadcasted documentary called the ˇ°Great Yellow Riverˇ±. The ocarina received a huge response and attention by Koreans through this event.
In search of being able to listen directly to the beautiful sounding instrument that they listened to through recorded media, a strong interest in quality ocarinas began in Korea. Consequently, widespread development and attempts towards making ocarinas was commenced in Korea.
From the middle of 1990, a group of ocarina enthusiasts consisting mainly of youths started to emerge.
By 2000, the availability of the internet enabled information regarding ocarinas to spread rapidly throughout the nation, and the development of ocarinas increased dramatically.
Schools started including the ocarina as an important part of musical education, the ocarina became popular as a beneficial hobby, and ocarina enthusiasts and members continue to grow in numbers today.
Currently in Korea, the ocarina is being taught to students, and much activity is being organized and initiated by the ocarina groups and associations. Furthermore, the ocarina continues to receive much attention and favour by the mass Korean population. The ocarina is solidly becoming a national instrument in Korea for these many reasons.
